Why won't my iPhone photo open on Windows or in other apps?

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, a format many apps and older Windows versions don't support. Converting to JPG or PNG fixes that.

Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG uses standard JPEG compression — quality loss is minimal and not visible at normal viewing sizes.
